LAS VEGAS- The University of Utah men's tennis team wrapped up the third day of play at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Friday in Las Vegas. Junior Benito Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla advanced to the third round in consolation play, while Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov, who led the Utes through two days of singles competition, fell in the round of 32 to the No. 11-seeded Enej Bonin of Denver, 7-6, 6-0.
Suriano defeated Steven Young of Air Force, 8-6, then advanced when his opponent withdrew due to injury. Suriano is slated to take on Josh Smith of UM Saturday in the third round. Medinilla also advanced to the third round when both opponents Bryan Marchant of Utah State and Alberto Fuentes of MSU retired due to injury. Medinilla will take on Alex Joitoiu of UI on Saturday.
Freshman Matt Cowley had a tough loss to Markus Schleuter of MSU, 9-7, while fellow freshman Brad Weaver fell to Roman Warias of BYU, 8-4. Freshman Gino Octa lost to David Flodberg of Northern Arizona, 8-4, and freshman Devin Lane was defeated by Mike Facey of UM, 8-6.
In doubles consolation, Lane and Medinilla fell to Charlie Alvarado and Rene Ruegamer of UNLV, 8-6.
The Utes will resume play at the ITA Regionals on Saturday and Sunday.
