Mamedov Advances to Round of 32 at ITA Regional Tournament

LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team saw sophomore Dmytro Mamedov advance to the round of 32 at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Thursday.

In the first round, the No. 25-seeded Mamedov defeated Diego Campos of MSU, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5. He then came from behind in the second round to defeat Alex Bull of UNLV 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. He is slated to take on the No. 11- seeded Enej Bonin of Denver Friday.

In other first round matches, Devin Lane defeated Anthony Trabert of Washinton State, 6-2, 6-3, before losing to Alex Joitoiu of UI, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Benito Suriano defeated Jordan Rozenfeld of Nevada, 6-3, 7-6, before losing to Spencer Smith of BYU in the round of 64, 7-6, 6-1. After splitting the first two sets, each capturing one by a 6-3 score, freshman Garrett LaBarre retired his match against Nate Gross of Idaho State due to injury.

Freshman Alejandro Medinilla lost to Patrick Kawka of BYU, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, while fellow freshman Brad Weaver lost to Erik Sheldon of Boise State, 6-1, 6-2. Gino Octa also lost his first round match to Feddy Walsh of Boise State, 6-3, 6-2.

In consolation play, Medinilla defeated Fredrik Peterson of Utah State in a tight match, 4-6, 6-2, 11-9. He will take on Bryan Marchant of Utah State Friday in the second round. Four other Utes will play consolation matches Friday, as Weaver takes on Roman Warias of BYU, Cowley faces Markus Schleuter of MSU, Suriano battles Steven Young of Air Force, and Octa plays David Flodberg of Northern Arizona.

The Utah doubles team of Lane and Medinilla defeated Patrick Schimmelbauer and Dominic Bermudez of Northern Arizona, 8-5, in the round of 64, but fell to Thomas Shubert and Smith of BYU, 8-4, in the next round. The duo went on to defeat Ryan Garner and Ben Rode of Washington State in consolation play, 8-6 and is now slated to take on Charlie Alvarado and Rene Ruegamer of UNLV.

Mamedov and Octa defeated Flodberg and Robin Pezzuto of Northern Arizona, 8-2, before losing in the round of 32 to the No. 11-seeded Mehdi Bouras and Kasper Konyves of UNLV, 8-5. In consolation play, the duo lost to Diego Campos and Markus Schleuter of MSU, 8-6.

Cowley and Weaver defeated Rodrigo Azevedo and Colton Pate of Idaho State, 8-4, before falling to the No. 9-seeded Andy Jackson and Lance Wilhelm of Air Force, 8-5 in the round of 32. In consolation play, Cowley and Weaver fell to Alex Clinkenbear and Yannick Weihs of Denver, 9-7.

The No. 15-seeded LaBarre and Suriano lost to Jacob Asplund and Nikita Ryashchenko of Utah State, 8-4 in the first round. They withdrew from consolation play.

Play resumes at the ITA Mountain Regionals on Friday.
