SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (4-13-1, 2-2-1 MWC) fell by a 1-0 score to San Diego State (6-8-3, 4-1-0 MWC) Thursday night at Ute Field. Utah outshot the Aztecs, 11-8, but were ultimately beaten by a free kick from Michaela DeJesus in the 70th minute of play.
Utah dominated play in the first half, outshooting SDSU 6-2, but was unable to slip one past Aztec goalkeeper Aubree Southwick. The Utes' best chances came when junior forward Chelsea Forbes struck a nice shot from distance that bent just wide right of the goal, and redshirt sophomore midfielder Katie Martinez ripped an open shot but hit it straight at Southwick.
"I thought we were fantastic in the first half and unlucky not to get a goal," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "But we were not good enough in the second half. Lauren Hair was good all night, she was a thorn in their side for most of the game. But we didn't get her enough balls in spots where she could find the goal. I thought Chelsea Forbes was great in the first half too, good on the dribble, making some slip passes, but it just wasn't the case in the second half."
In the second half, San Diego State picked up its play and outshot the Utes 6-5, while earning three corner kicks to the Utes' one. With the score tied 0-0 at the 69:03 mark, DeJesus lined up a free kick from the center of the field about 20 yards from goal and struck a well-placed shot into the bottom right corner of the net for the game winner.
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made four saves in the Utah net, while Southwick made two stops for the Aztecs. The loss marked the 11th time Utah has been held scoreless this year and the seventh time they have fallen by a one-goal margin.
Utah could find itself in fourth or fifth place in the MWC title race with seven points following tonight's result. If UNLV defeats BYU, the Utes will rest in fifth behind the Rebels' eight points. Should UNLV lose or draw, Utah will sit in fourth position with two games remaining, both at home.
The Utes' next contest is against the Rebels, Saturday, Oct. 23. Kickoff from Ute Field is slated for 1 p.m. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free t-shirt.
