LAS VEGAS, Nev.- The second-seeded team of junior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Paige Miles of the University of Utah women's tennis team won the doubles title at the USTA/ITA Mountain Region Championships Sunday, by downing UNLV's Jana Albers and Adrienn Hidvegi 8-3, in the finals.
This is the Utes' first regional title since 1991, when current Utah assistant coach Ruth Ann Allen née Stevens won the doubles crown with partner Lisa Salvatierra.
In the singles finals, top-seeded, 67th-ranked Putilina suffered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 upset to second-seeded Lucia Batta of UNLV. The Ute went 5-1 overall in tournament singles action.
As the doubles champions, the 33rd-ranked Utah tandem of Putilina and Miles receive an automatic berth to the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament will take place at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center's new indoor courts, Nov. 4-7.
