SALT LAKE CITY - Freshmen Brad Weaver and Matt Cowley advanced to the doubles consolation finals as the University of Utah men's tennis team completed day two at the Utah Invitational. Freshman Alejandro Medinilla won the singles consolation championship following his opponent's withdraw.
The Ute duo of Weaver and Cowley defeated Landon Barlow and Ryan Garner of Washington State in their first consolation match, 8-4. They advanced to the finals following an injury to their semifinal opponent and will face Patrick Kawka and Evan Urbina of BYU Saturday in the consolation finals. Dmytro Mamedov and Gino Octa faced fellow Utes Garrett LaBarre and Benito Suriano in consolation play, winning by a score of 8-5. The duo then fell to Kawka and Urbina of BYU, 9-7.
Medinilla beat Ben Rode of Washington State 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 and took the championship of singles consolation when opponent Jakob Asplund of Utah State withdrew. Weaver fell to Oliver Good of Washington State 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 in a tight match.
In the singles main draw, Octa fell to Tyler Loong of BYU, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
In the doubles main draw, Devin Lane and Medinilla fell to the No. 3-seeded Good and Simon Unger of Washington State 9-8(4) in the quarterfinals.
"As young and inexperienced as we are, we put ourselves in the position to win matches today," said head coach F.D Robbins. "Unfortunately we weren't able to close them out. We will have to learn to hold leads and close out matches better."
Finals for both singles and doubles will take place on Saturday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
