The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the first day of play at the Utah Invitational Thursday at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Freshman Gino Octa headlined day one for the Utes, advancing to the quarterfinals of the singles draw.
Octa defeated Nate Ballam of Utah State, 6-3, 6-3, then defeated Eric Sheldon of Boise State, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round. He will compete against Tyler Loong of BYU Friday in the quarterfinals.
No. 8-seeded senior Benito Suriano defeated Ben Rode of Washington State, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, but fell to Loong of BYU, 7-5, 7-6(6) in the second round. Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov also reached the second round, topping Roman Warias of BYU, 6-3, 6-2 in his first match, before falling to the No. 4-seeded Spencer Smith of BYU, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4). Matt Cowley beat Oliver Good of Washington State 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 in his first round match, then fell to the No. 7-seeded Freddy Walsh of Boise State, 6-4, 6-2.
In Utah's other first round matches, Freshman Alejandro Medenilla fell to Bryan Marchant of BYU, 7-6(2), 6-2. Devin Lane lost to Fredrik Peterson of Utah State 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5) in a tough match, and Brad Weaver fell to the No. 2-seeded Evan Urbina of BYU, 6-1, 6-3.
"Today was a tough day out there, we didn't play at our best," said head coach F.D Robbins. "We need to learn to compete more."
In doubles play,Utah's No. 4-seeded team of Garrett LaBarre and Suriano fell to David Hintze and Rode of Washington State, 8-6, in the first round. Lane and Medenilla advanced to the second round with a day one win over Ricardo Campos and Warias of BYU, 8-3. The duo will face the No. 3 seeded Good and Simon Unger of Washington State Friday in the quarterfinals.
In consolation singles, Utah teammates LaBarre and Medenilla faced off with Medenilla coming out on top, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Lane fell to Jakob Asplund of Utah State 6-2, 6-4. Weaver advanced to the consolation second round after his opponent withdrew, and he will face Good on Friday.
In Friday's consolation doubles, Utah teammates will face each other once again when the Suriano and LaBarre take on Mamedov and Octa. Weaver and Cowley will square off against Landon Barlow and Ryan Garner of Washington State.
Quarterfinals and semifinals of both singles and doubles will be played Friday, Oct. 15. The championship matches in both draws will be played on Saturday.
