SALT LAKE CITY - The 51st-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (1-0) defeated Utah State (1-2), 4-3, Saturday at Eccles Tennis Center to begin the 2010 dual match season. Stephen Jacobs clinched the match for the Utes from the No. 6 position defeating Nikita Ryashchenko, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2.
"It is good to get the first win of the season under our belt," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We are very fortunate to win today and we will need to improve and play better in the remainder of the season."
Utah started off with a win from the No. 1 doubles spot, Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding topped Jakob Asplund and Bryan Marchant, 8-6. Utah State answered with a win from the No. 3 position, Nikita Ryashchenko and Alex Thatcher defeated Jacobs and Benito Suriano, 8-6. Utah State captured the doubles point from the No. 2 slot Timmy Allin and Artem Strunnikov fell to Sven Poslusny and Amit Maharaj, 9-7.
In singles, Allin came up with a win from the No. 5 position defeating Maharaj, 6-4, 6-1, tying the match at 1-1. In the No. 3 spot Golding put the Utes up 2-1 topping Marchant, 6-2, 6-2. Utah State answered with a win in the No. 2 position Poslusny defeated Suriano, 6-2, 6-3, tying the match at 2-2.
In the No. 4 slot Jason Smits put the Utes in the lead topping Thatcher, 7-5, 6-1. In the No. 1 spot Eilers fell to Asplund in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-0. Jacobs clinched the match from the No. 6 position topping Ryashchenko, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Up next the Utes will face Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn. Jan. 31.
