LARAMIE, Wyo. - Both of the University of Utah swimming and diving teams were defeated Friday night by Mountain West Conference rival Wyoming. The Utah women fell to the Cowgirls, 182 -115, while the Utah men lost to the Cowboys, 162.5-137.5.
"Today was a long day," said Utah Head Coach Greg Winslow. "Unfortunately, it was a tough transition for us to travel seven hours on a bus and then to get right into the pool."
Despite the loss to the undefeated Cowgirls, the Utah women made an impact in the pool. Junior Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah) set a new Corbett pool record in the 100 free with a time of 51.67, replacing BYU's old record by .23 seconds. Edge also took second in both the 50 (23.57) and 200 (57.86) free.
Sophomore Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.) also performed well against the Cowgirls, taking first-place times in all three of her scheduled events. In the 100 and 200 fly, she set times of 56.89 and 2:10.80 respectively and recorded a finish of 2:08.39 in the 200 IM.
Caron, Sarah Boylen (South Bend, Ind.) and Jana Willsey (Clearwater, Fla.) were able to sweep the Cowgirls in the 200 fly with times of 2:10.80, 2:15.22 and 2:18.12, respectively.
Utah men, sophomore Eric Murray (Woodstock, Ga.) and freshmen Bjorn Gunnarsson (Norrkoping, Sweden), Andy Lamb (Raleigh, N.C.) and Karson Applin (Houston, Texas), pulled together to win the 200 free relay for the first time in three years with a time of 1:24.50.
"It was all about pride tonight with our men 's team," said Winslow. "It was great to see them come together."
Senior David Pursley (Edmonton, Canada) displayed his athleticism in the pool and finished first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:10.01. Pursley also took second in the 500 (4:47.33) free and 200 (1:57.45) IM.
The Utes head to Colorado Springs, Colo., tonight to compete against the Air Force Falcons Saturday afternoon. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
