SALT LAKE CITY - Despite Kalee Whipple's second double-double of the season, the Utah women's basketball team saw their 19-game home winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 54-49 loss to UNLV.
The Utes held a slim lead through most of the second half, including a six-point lead, 47-41, after two three-pointers from Janita Badon and Whipple with 3:25 left. UNLV came back with an eight-point run to take a two-point lead with a minute remaining, 49-47.
As the scoreboard time went under a minute, Taryn Wicijowski was fouled and hit both of her free-throw shots to tie up the game. UNLV took the ball on the other end of the floor and after Erica Helms drove the ball inside, she passed back out to Mia Bell, who hit her three-pointer to put the Rebels on top with 29 seconds left. The Utes got the ball on the other end of the floor, but Whipple's three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining bounced halfway in then back out, sealing the win for UNLV.
Whipple scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds and tied her career high with five three's. Wicijowski tallied 11 rebounds. Halie Sawyer had eight points and seven rebounds. Badon tied her career-high with eight assists and had seven points and three steals.
Utah struggled at the free-throw line, going just 4-for-11, and turned the ball over 19 times, which UNLV turned into 21 points.
The Utes spend next week on the road, playing at San Diego State on Wednesday, Jan. 20, before traveling to Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 23.
