The University of Utah track and field team performed well at the Bengal Shoot Out on Friday, winning three events with several athletes setting new personal records. Senior Sarah Grimm won the weight throw and true freshman Nikkie Rudder won the shot put. Utah's 4x400m relay team comprised of Whitney Wellington, Chelsey Kaplar, Alyssa Johnson and Ashley Mosley won outright with a time of 3:53.63.
"Our goal for this meet was to learn and to challenge people," said Head Coach Kyle Kepler. "We didn't back down if people passed us. Overall, this was an exciting meet for our team and I think we met our goals."
The throwers, under the direction of Coach Tapio Kuusela, had a standout day in both the weight throw and shot put. Grimm set another personal best in the weight throw on Friday with a toss of 60-0.25, which ranks third in school history. Rudder had a personal best in the shot put with a mark of 45-5.25 to win the event. Freshman Anneli Stahl also had a good day in the weight throw, earning fifth place overall with a toss of 52-11.
"It was great to see Sarah win her event again and set another impressive PR," said Kepler. "Nikkie was absolutely amazing in the shot put. She had done well on all of her throws, but ultimately won the event on her last throw. Tapio is doing well with his group. They are so hard working and I couldn't be happier."
On the track, true freshman Angela Kaplar got things going in the 60m hurdles. After having a lifetime best at the BYU Invitational last week (9.05), Kaplar surpassed her time in the finals of the event, finishing in 8.92 to tie for fifth-place overall.
"Angie (Kaplar) is the best technician and is great when she is up and going," said Kepler. "She did a great job. We'll continue to work on her start and foot speed and I think we'll continue to see large improvements and a lot of good things from her."
Utah's 4x400m relay team (A) teamed up for the first time in competition on Friday. They ran a come-from-behind race to win outright with a combined time of 3:53.63. The (B) team, comprised of Lucy Yates, Natalie Young, Lauryn McKay and Amanda Mergaert finished in fifth place overall with a time of 4:00.20.
"Our A group was in fifth place at the first interchange but the two freshmen (Mosley and Johnson) started passing up teams and it worked out well," said Kepler. "Our other teams ran strong as well. Relay is something we take pride in."
