SALT LAKE CITY - The 2009 women's cross country team will open its season Saturday at the Utah State Open in Logan, Utah. The three-mile race will be held at the American West Heritage Center at 9 a.m. MST. The Utes will be competing against Utah State and Weber State.
Utah's veteran runners will be joined by seven freshmen or first-year runners this weekend.
Coach Kepler's Thoughts
"This is a very young team. As our first meet, they are all really excited but nervous at the same time. We will be giving a good effort and running hard. We will do what we always do: compete hard and not back down and race to the end. This will be fun and we can only go up from here.
"This race is an opportunity to establish our base line and see where we are. We've been practicing for three weeks with ourselves so it will be nice to compete against others.
"The most important time of the season is still 60 days away so we will be making the most of each race until then."
Looking Back
Last year at Utah State, the Utes took third place overall with 57 points. The Utes were paced last year by Chelsea DiGrazia, who took first place in the race with a time of 17:57.2.
Samantha Gaffney competed in the race as a then-sophomore transfer with a time of 18:54.9 for a 17th-place finish. Sydney Osmun finished in 19:29.3 for 19th place.
