Sept. 29, 2009
The men's tennis team page will now feature periodic team updates as they sent by assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. Below is the first installment of this new feature. Check back often for team news, straight from the source.
Dear Tennis Friends,
The first few weeks of every year are always a little chaotic. The new student-athletes have to learn the ropes, picture days, handing out practice gear, initial team meetings, etc. It is the same frantic routine every year and I am happy those things are now over and we can focus on tennis. We started our official practices last Wednesday, which means we are spending up to 20 hours a week with our guys. We have about 3 weeks to prepare our guys for our annual University of Utah Invitational tournament (Oct. 15-17 at Liberty Park) and four weeks until the ITA Regional Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. (Oct. 21-25). We are very talented and this month will be a good test to see where we stand. Talent alone simply doesn't win championships. We realize that and so do our players, and they have been putting in a fantastic effort to make this a successful season.
NEW ADDITION:
Last week we added a new player to our team. Brad Weaver from Salt Lake City, Utah, has now officially become a member of the University of Utah men's tennis team. Brad comes to us from East High School. He was ranked #2 in the state of Utah this past year and was the runner up in the 4A State Championships. We are very excited to have Brad join our team as he is a hard worker and has an offensive game that fits our coaching style. Our guys have welcomed him very well and the transition has been smooth for him. Congrats Brad on making the team!
CHANGES:
As you might have already noticed, our email header has changed. Wes Hancock, who was our `poster boy' last year, graduated and we couldn't think of a better person to put on there than our senior co-captain Timmy Allin. Over the past three years, Timmy has developed into an energetic team leader, who has recorded many wins for us in both singles and doubles. A model student-athlete, he sets a great example in the classroom for all of his teammates, earning Academic All-American honors three times.
Besides the header change, we have also decided to change our email address. This will be the last time that this update email will come directly from my address. Starting with our next update it will come from menstennis@utah.edu. FD and I now share that email account and we will use it for official purposes. We feel this will help to reinforce the fact that we are one united team in all aspects, from the way we play to the way we send emails. If you still want to email FD or myself privately, you can do so at (fdrobbins@huntsman.utah.edu) or (rbrateanu@huntsman.utah.edu).
Beginning this week, our Sports Information Department has decided to also post each one of our updates on www.utahutes.com TWITTER/FACEBOOK: SCHEDULE: 01/23 Utah State @ 3PM Check out our complete 2009-10 schedule here. Our strong showing last year in the national rankings gave us an automatic birth into the National Indoor Championships. We will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. on Jan. 31 to face Tennessee in the first round and we will play the winner/loser of the VCU - South Carolina match in the next round. Furthermore, we have away matches against perennial powerhouses Cal and Stanford on March 2nd and 3rd, respectively. We set the bar high last year with a 2nd place finish in the Mountain West and a final national ranking of #51, but we are looking forward to improving on both fronts. We have already started our quest for a 25th conference championship and I am looking forward to your support during this exciting season. Thanks and GO UTES!!
The internet revolution has definitely reached our team and as I have noted in earlier emails, we are now active on Facebook and Twitter. If you do not have an account yet, I urge you to get one. It is free and easy to use and it is a great way to stay in touch with us on a daily bases. Facebook is a little more dynamic for us and we have posted video of our match points against UNLV (2008), BYU (2008 - To win the MWC Championship) and Boise State (2009). Furthermore, you can find links to old newspaper articles about the U's tennis team. We currently have 301 members on Facebook and 50 on our Twitter accounts. We hope to see you on there soon!
Last, but definitely not least, we have finalized our schedule for this upcoming season. It sure was a battle this year. Due to the economic situation we had five teams cancel trips to Salt Lake and it was really hard finding good replacements. Here is our home dual-match schedule for 2010:
