SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team prepares for the USAFA Invitational this weekend, in Colorado Springs, Colo. Sophomore Anastasia Putilina will head to Los Angeles, Calif., instead to compete in the ITA All-Americans.
"This is a new tournament for us," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "It is a very competitive tournament with top schools from the mid-west and back east participating. It gives us the opportunity to compete against schools that we wouldn't normally get the chance to.
"It's great to have our top player [Putilina] going to the ITA All-Americans," Iandolo continued. "It is the biggest collegiate tournament of the fall and she'll get the chance to go up against some of the best players in the country."
Putilina's debut at the All-Americans will be in prequalifying singles, where she must win three rounds in order to move up to the qualifiers. The prequalifying round will be hosted by UCLA October 3-4, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Joining Putilina at the All-Americans will be assistant coach Ruth Ann Allen.
Competing at the USAFA Invitational will be seniors Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan, junior Evgenia Kryuchkova, sophomores Missy Harris and Lexi Provancha and freshman Paige Miles.
The six Utes will be competing against opponents from Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Northern Colorado, Harvard, Illinois State, Oregon, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
Recently at the BYU Invitational, Maughan captured the Flight-B singles title, making it the third year in a row the Utes have won it.
Play will begin the morning of Friday, October 2, at the USAFA tennis facilities.
