EAGLE, IDAHO - The University of Utah women's cross country team competed in the first 5-kilometer race of the season on Saturday at the Bob Firman Invitational. The team placed fifth overall, led by freshman Jenny McCune. BYU was the overall winner of the women's collegiate 5k race.
The Utes were led for the third straight meet by McCune who earned 21st-place overall (19:06.91). Freshman Megan Combe was the second Ute to cross the line, finishing in 27th-place (19:21.75), followed by freshman Amanda Mergaert who took 30th overall (19:28.29).
Rounding out the top five scoring runners for Utah was freshman Rachel Schmalzle who took 33rd-place (19:34.46)and junior Alexis Davis who placed 36th (19:44.62).
Utah had four other runners compete on Saturday. Senior Sydney Osmun finished sixth for the Utes and 39th overall (19:57.87). Freshman Kacee Hildebrandt returned to the mix for Saturday's race after sitting out last weekend's meet in Montana. Hildebrandt finished right behind Osmun for 40th-place overall (20:03.87).
Freshman Chantel Hunt finished 43rd (20:15.85) in the 5K race and sophomore Brooke Casagranda finished 58th overall (21:28.75).
"We ran better than a week ago," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We still have to run a better middle of the race and our sprint to the finish needs to improve."

The University of Utah will have the next two weeks to prepare for the University of Nevada-Reno Invitational on Oct. 10, 2009.
