PROVO, Utah- The University of Utah women's tennis team shined in their fall season debut at the BYU Invitational Thursday, September 17. The Utes continue day two of play at the invitational Friday, September 18 at 10 a.m. MT at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Complex in Provo.
"I am proud of the fact that we went down there and pretty much dominated on the first day," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Tomorrow is a big day, we'll see if we can push through and get players to the finals."
Senior Erin Monson, junior Evgenia Kryuchkova, sophomores Anastasia Putilina and Missy Harris and freshman Paige Miles all advanced to the quarterfinal round of play in the singles flight-A bracket. Senior Andrea Maughan advances to the semifinal round of singles flight-B. All three of the Utes doubles team will advance to the quarterfinals.
After having a bye in flight-A's round of 32, third-seeded Putilina defeated Hailey Swenson of Utah State, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16. She faces sixth-seeded Megan Price of BYU in the quarterfinals.
In the round of 32 fifth-seeded Kryuchkova downed Monica Abella of USU, 6-1, 6-2, and Rebecca Berger of Wyoming in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-1. In the quarterfinals the junior goes up against fellow Ute Monson.
Eighth-seeded Miles downed BYU's Elizaveta Ezhova in the round of 32, 6-4, 6-1, moving on to down Wyoming's Carly Van Hollen, 6-4, 6-3 in the next round. The Ute faces first-seeded McCall Jones of BYU in the quarterfinals.
Monson defeated Szandi Kovacs of Wyoming, 7-6(1), 6-2 in the round of 32 and went on to upset Colorado States' fourth-seeded Laura Neal, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the round of 16.
Newcomer Harris downed USU's Kristina Voytsekhovich, 6-2, 6-1, and upset Wyoming's seventh-seeded Sarah Summerfield in the next round, 7-6(1), 6-7(5), 6-0. In the quarterfinals the Ute will go up against second-seeded Kristina Doerr of BYU.
Maughan received a bye in flight-B's round of sixteen and went on to defeat Weber State's Elsje Beneke 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. The senior faces Wyoming's Sasa Nemcova in the semifinals.
Sophomore Lexi Provancha fell in the round of 32 to sixth-seeded Price, 6-2, 7-5.
All three of Utah's doubles teams received a bye in the round of 32. The third-seeded team of Monson and Maughan downed BYU's Elle Carney and Aubrey Paul, 8-2, in the round of 16. The duo goes up against Wyoming's Paloma Navarro and Van Hollen in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Putilina and Miles blanked the USU team of Abella and Voytsekhovich, 8-0, in the round of 16 and faces BYU's Chie Hayasaka and Ezhova in the quarterfinals.
Kryuchkova and Harris defeated the Wyoming team of Summerfield and Berger in the round of 16, 8-3. The Ute duo goes up against the first-seeded team of Jones and Price of BYU.
