SKILLMAN, N.J. - Four University of Utah men's tennis players have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes, the ITA announced this week. Timothy Allin, Phillip Eilers, Stephen Jacobs and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti all earned the academic accolade for 2008-09.
"I am very excited to have four ITA academic award winners on our team this year," said Utah head coach F.D. Robbins. "(Assistant coach) Roeland Brateanu and I believe that our student-athletes are students first and these four young men embody the values of being a true student-athlete. Their grades represent their hard work and dedication in the classroom and I am very pleased to see that the ITA has rewarded them for it. Congratulations to Timmy, Phillip, Stephen and Othman."
To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.50 in the current academic year and must be enrolled at the institution for a minimum of two semesters.
Allin is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and has also earned the same award from the Mountain West Conference all three years. Jacobs is a three-time MWC Scholar-Athlete and twice an ITA honoree. Ouariti is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and has won the MWC award once. Eilers earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete award in 2008 at Indiana before transferring to Utah to win his second accolade.
