SALT LAKE CITY - - The University of Utah men's tennis team has signed Dmitry Mamedov (Ukraine) and Alex Golding (Great Britain) to National Letters of Intent, head coach F.D. Robbins announced Wednesday. Both are international standouts who bring impressive results and experience to the Utes.
"We are very excited about adding Dmitry and Alex to our squad," said Robbins. "Alex is the serve-and-volley type of player we were looking for. He has had great results in England and on the international stage. Dmitry is an all-court player and is one of the top players in his home country of Ukraine. We expect both players to make an immediate impact on next year's line up and we are looking forward to their arrival in late August."
Mamedov is coming off of very successful campaigns in 2008 and 2009, most recently capturing the singles championship at the ITF G5 event in Ukraine on July 12. A 6-foot-1 right-handed player, he also reached the doubles final at the Ukraine G5 event. Mamedov is a two-time under-18 national finalist in Ukraine and was the under-14 national champion. His other recent singles results include a semifinals appearance at the Donetsk Cup, an ITF G3 event held in Ukraine and quarterfinal efforts at the Green Cup (G5) in Russia and the Belarus Cup (G4).
Golding is another 6-foot-1 right-hander from Harrow, England, and is the No. 6-ranked junior in the UK and carries an ITF ranking of 193. Most recently, he was singles quarterfinalist at the International Grasscourt Championships (G3) in June and reached the round of 16 in an ITF G4 in Great Britain in April. Golding was a doubles semifinalist at the 2009 ITF World Junior Championships in Malaysia last April, and a quarterfinalist at the Japan Open two weeks later. He also made the finals at the 2008 Rushbrooke ITF G5 in Ireland in both singles and doubles.
"Becoming a Ute is a very exciting step in my career," said Golding. "I am looking forward to a very successful first season"
Mamedov and Golding will bolster a Utah lineup that captured the 2008 MWC championship and finished runner-up in 2009.
