COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Seven University of Utah women's tennis players have earned Mountain West Conference academic accolades, the league office announced this week. Four of them earned the Schloar-Athlete award, the highest academic honor given by the conference, for the 2008-09 academic year.
To be eligible for the MWC Scholar-Athlete Award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
The Scholar-Athlete award was bestowed upon Evgenia Kryuchkova (Sophomore, 3.75, Parks, Recreation and Tourism), Andrea Maughan (Junior, 3.52, Exercise and Sport Science), Alexi Provancha (Freshman, 3.92, Exercise and Sport Science) and Anastasia Putilina (Freshman, 3.50, Undeclared). Krychkova and Maughan are both multiple-year winners of the award.
All four players were also named to the MWC Academic All-Conference team for the spring semester. Three others were added to the academic all-conference squad as well, including Karine Bourdages (Senior, 3.44, Biology), Erin Monson (Junior, 3.10, Communications) and Leigh Walsh (Senior, 3.44, Exercise and Sport Science and Communications).
To earn academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor. Sports included in the spring semester awards are baseball, basketball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis and track and field.
