SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 46th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (16-7, 4-1 MWC) lost their first conference match of the regular season to No. 41st-ranked New Mexico (16-4, 3-1 MWC), 5-2.
"Today is a tough loss. We have to give credit to New Mexico for playing very tough," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. " We had chances, but couldn't capitalize on them. But I think that our guys competed well and fought incredibly hard. Tomorrow is another opportunity to clinch a share of the conference title."
The No. 1 spot Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers began doubles defeating Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby, 8-1.
Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs fell to Carl Ho and Ben Dunbar, 8-4, setting up Geaeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood to clinch the doubles point for UNM topping Timmy Allin and John Taylor, 9-8(5).
In singles Benito fell to Kassautzki, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot. In the No. 2 spot Eilers topped Bugby,6-2, 6-4, putting the match at, 2-1, UNM.
In the No. 6 position Allin was defeated by Ho, 7-6(4), 7-6(3), setting up Dunbar to clinch the match for the Lobos at, 4-1, defeating Taylor, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, from the No. 4 spot.
In the No. 1 spot Hancock was defeated by Parkes, 6-1, 6-7(8), 6-3. Jason Smits topped Anderson, 7-6(3), 6-2, from the No. 5 slot to end the match at, 5-2.
Utah has the opportunity to clinch a share of the MWC title tomorrow against San Diego State beginning at 9 a.m.
