SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team has signed Matt Cowley and Devin Lane to National Letters of Intent. Both are local standouts and will contribute their talents on the court and in the classroom in the fall of 2010.
"Roeland and I are extremely excited to have signed Matt and Devin to Letters of Intent," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "By adding Matt and Devin we are adding the Utah 4A state champion for the past three years to our team. Both young men are quality additions, both on and off the court.
Cowley joins the Utes as a 6-foot right-handed player from North Salt Lake. He attends Woods Cross High School where he recently went undefeated with a record of 20-0. Cowley is a four-star recruit ranked as high as No. 86 in the country and currently holds the No. 1 singles state title in Division 4A. In 2008 he finished as the No. 1-ranked under-18 in the state of Utah.
"I've grown up as a huge Utes fan," said Cowley. "Signing with Utah and becoming a student-athlete for this amazing university is very surreal."
Lane is a four-star recruit from Salt Lake City who was considered a five-star prospect prior to recent injury. He is a five-foot-eight right-handed player, with an all-court serve-and-volley game. He joins the squad from Highland High School, where he won the No. 1 singles 4A State Championship in 2006 and 2007. Lane has been ranked as high as No. 42 in the country.
