COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving preseason rankings were released today. The Utah women's team was picked to finish sixth and the men's team was chosen fifth.
"The team has gotten together to talk about the ranking already and they understand the position they are in," said head coach Greg Winslow. "We don't put a lot of stock in the pre-season rankings. Other teams don't know our roster and the squad."
Leading the rankings in the MWC for the men was UNLV, receiving 25 points. Behind the Rebels was BYU with 18 points. Air Force came in third with 17 points and Wyoming was fourth with 16 points. Utah tied with TCU with a total of seven points.
On the women's side, BYU was picked to finish first in the MWC with 63 points, followed by UNLV and San Diego State with 54 and 49 points, respectively. Utah came in sixth with 30 points, trailing Wyoming and Colorado State, who had 42 and 38 points, respectively. Trailing Utah was TCU with 25 points, New Mexico with 14 points and Air Force with nine points.
Both Ute teams are young, with only three seniors for the women and four for the men. There is a total of 18 freshmen on both teams.
"The coaches and the team know that we have to work hard this season. We are prepared to do that," said Winslow. "We have a young team, but we are ready to go out and surprise people and prove a lot of people wrong."
Both Utah swimming and diving teams will begin their season on the road when they travel to Colorado to take on the University of Denver and North Texas on Oct. 24 at Denver. Utah will compete in its first conference meet when UNLV travels to Ute Natatorium on Oct. 30.
