SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Utah men's swimming and diving team got its first win of the season on Friday, upsetting Pacific-10 Conference power Arizona State, 187-113, at Ute Natatorium. The Utah women fell to ASU, 194-102.
"I am really impressed with our men's team," said Utah head coach Greg Winslow. "We've been right on the edge, waiting for things to click for them and I think it's finally clicked."
The Utah men finished first in 12 of 16 events. The Utes were led by senior John Baque (Olympia, Wash.), who finished first in the 100 (58.93) and 200 breast (2:08.31), the 200 IM (1:57.78) and helped the 400 medley relay team to a first-place finish (3:29.45).
"I'm really proud of John. He's been outstanding so far in his senior year," said Winslow. "His confidence has grown and he keeps getting better and better. It's exactly what you like to see in an athlete and it makes it fun to work with him."
Also on the winning 400 medley team were sophomore Major Robinson (Missoula, Mont.), and freshmen Karson Applin (Houston, Texas) and Bjorn Gunnarsson (Norrkoping, Sweden).
All three men also finished first in individual events. Robinson took first place in the 100 back (52.79) and came from behind to finish first in the 200 back (1:52.64). Applin finished first in the 100 fly (51.71) and Gunnarsson took the first-place spot in the 50 free (21.88).
Sophomore Eric Murray finished first in two individual events, coming from behind to win the 100 free (47.62) and finishing first in the 200 free (1:44.62). Murray also anchored the 200 free relay team to a first-place finish (1:26.92). Also on that team were Applin, Gunnarsson and freshman Andy Lamb (Raleigh, N.C).
Other notable performances for the Utah men: The Utah men swept the top three spots in the 500 free with freshman Bryan Michaels (Shoreline, Wash.) taking first (4:44.54), senior David Pursley in second (4:45.36) and freshman Ryan Hansen in third (4:46.52). Pursley also finished second in the 200 IM (2:00.27) and in the 200 free (1:45.85). Lamb finished second in the 100 back (52.84) while Michaels finished second in the 1000 free (9:46.08). Utah swept the top three spots in the 100 breast with Baque first, Applin in second (59.08) and senior Garrett Peterson (Las Vegas, Nev.) in third (1:00.10). Freshman Eric Bonicelli (Overland Park, Kan.) took second in the 200 fly (1:57.04). Gunnarsson finished third in the 100 free (48.41).
The Utah women had three first-place finishes for the night in the loss to the Sun Devils. Sophomore Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.) finished first in the 100 fly (56.33) for the Utes while sophomore Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah) took the first-place spot in the 50 free (24.08).
"ASU is a good team and they showed it here tonight. Ultimately, it comes down to a lack of leadership. Our women's team is still looking for someone to stand up and take the lead for this team," said Winslow.
The final first-place finisher for the Utes was Ellis Walter (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the 1-meter dive with her score of 273.38.
"ASU is one of the elite diving teams in the country and having Ellis get first against them is outstanding," said Winslow. "Ellis qualified for the zone diving regional as well. She has been exceptional and that's why we recruited her. We're excited for what's to come for her."
Other notable performances for the Utah women: freshman Kayla Buck (Folsom, Calif.) finished third in both the 1000 free (10:37.38) and the 500 free (5:16.04). Caron finished second in the 200 free (1:53.00) and finished tenths of a second behind second place in the 200 IM (2:07.86). Senior Beth Gunderson (Portland, Ore.) took third in the 100 back (59.71). Freshman Sarah Boylen (South Bend, Ind.) finished in third in the 200 fly (2:11.82) for the Utes. Junior Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah) was third in the 50 free (24.56). Edge finished second in the 100 free (52.86). Freshman Sarah Cox (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished third in the 200 back (2:08.22) and junior Maiya Otsuka took second in the 200 breast (2:22.76).
"I'm excited by the freshmen of both teams because of their performances in the pool and their enthusiasm on deck," said Winslow. "The women never stopped fighting until the end and they stayed on their feet for the whole thing."
Both Utah swimming and diving teams are back in action at home on Saturday, Oct. 31 against Mountain West Conference rival UNLV. The meet begins at 1 p.m.
