Welcome to Roman's World. Periodically, this space will be used to post excerpts from the personal blog of Roman Margoulis, a freshman men's tennis player at the U. Roman came to Utah from Luxembourg this past summer and shares some interesting opinions and insights on American culture, college life and Utah Tennis.
Hi Everyone,
This week went by quickly. During fall break I felt pretty bored, because there was not much to do besides practicing and sleeping. So I was glad school had resumed, which is a strange realization for me. There still isn't anything spectacular to say about school, I just sit in class and take notes, like a student is probably is supposed to do, and revise them last minute before the midterms. So far it is more than enough, but I will have to increase my studying time once it gets tougher.
It is certain that we are in fall now. It's a beautiful season in Utah, with all the different colors, the leaves falling down, the sunsets behind the mountains. If I had more time to sit down and appreciate it, I would certainly do so. I was looking forward to the first snow, but I think it's the only snow I will be looking forward to.
As for tennis, I will quickly go over the final results of last week's tournament. Six out of 11 guys traveled to Las Vegas for Regionals. It's a bigger tournament than the one we had last week. The most notable result is that Phil and Alex won the doubles and qualified for the Indoor National Championships. Phil also made the singles finals but lost.
I didn't speak to them yet about their impressions from Vegas, but another notable event from the trip was the rabbit hunt. Dima wanted to open the season officially by trying to catch a rabbit with his bare hands, so he carefully closed in on the rabbit and went for a big jump. The rabbit wasn't as stupid as expected and quickly ran away, leaving Dima hungry and with an injured hand, which forced him to withdraw from the tournament. We still laugh at this story, but we have to consider that Dima's well-being is essential for the team, and hopefully his injury won't leave him sidelined for too long. We also might invest as a team in a rifle for Dima, in case he wants to catch another rabbit, or deer, or maybe a siberian brown bear.
The week before we hosted our own tournament, the Utah Invitational, and Phil lost in the semis, but won the doubles consolation along with Alex. Dima lost in the consolation final. Altogether, the coaches were disappointed in the team's results, especially considering how much effort we put in the last few weeks. But we are all positive that everyone will be on top of their games once the regular season really starts in January.
As for us five who didn't go to Vegas, we probably could have taken it easy and just enjoyed our spare time without the coaches, but to everyone's surprise, we didn't. It was a week as hard as usual, the only difference being the absence of running. But we gave it all on court and in the gym, and we were satisfied with ourselves.
For those of you concerned about me getting the swine flu, be relieved, I got a vaccination this week, so I won't bring it back home. I didn't particularly enjoy the vaccination proccess, though. The doctor just walked up to me with some liquid in a little tube, put it in my nose and wanted me to sniff it in. I'm not used to taking in products through my nose, but I survived it with a scare. I also got some other vaccines while I was at it, because I hadn't done them in a while. I don't even remember all of them, but I should be the healthiest man alive.
Last but not least, I want to announce that I'm blond from now on. My roommate and I just changed our hair colors to be the color of the other one, so he has dark brown hair, while mine is supposed to be blond, but it might look orange at times. It's not as bad as it could have been, and I hope I have normal pictures of this soon. My parents were not sure whether they wanted to let me walk into the house once I'm home again, but I guess I will be normal again by that time. I also think that it's good to try out different things in life. And since I don't really have a reputation to look after in Utah, I could color my hair pink next week, we'll see.
Meanwhile, take care and talk to you soon,
Roman
