SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team will send the doubles pairing of senior Phillip Eilers and freshman Alex Golding to the prestigious ITA National Indoor Doubles Championships, Nov. 5-8. The event is hosted by Yale University and will take place in West Haven, Conn. at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Eilers and Golding earned an automatic berth in the elite 16-team national championship event by capturing the doubles title Sunday at the Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Championships. As the No. 4 seed, they received a first-round bye, then won five matches to win the regional crown. En route to the title, they upset the No. 1-seeded duo of Andrew Landwerlen and David Simson of Denver in the semifinals, 8-6. They also topped two Mountain West Conference foes along the way, beating teams from New Mexico and UNLV.
"I am very happy and proud that Phil and Alex won the doubles regional championship," said Utah head coach F.D. Robbins. "It will be a good test for them to see how they match up among the top 16 teams in the country."
Eilers and Golding become the first Utah pairing to qualify for National Indoors in more than 20 years. Utah has never had a doubles team reach the championship match at this event.
Eilers also made the singles finals at the Regional Championships but fell to Vicente Joli of Boise State, coming up just short of also earning a place in the 32-man draw at the National Indoor Singles Championships.
The draws and seedings for the ITA National Indoor Championships will be released Oct. 30.
