LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the second day of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. Phillip Eilers advanced to the quarterfinal round in singles main draw.
In main draw singles No. 3 seeded Eilers topped No. 25 seeded Matej Stakne of New Mexico State in the round of 32, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. In the round of 16 Eilers defeated Fabio Biasion of Denver, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, advancing to the quarterfinal round where he will face No. 9 seeded Corey Smith of Montana State.
Dmytro Mamedov withdrew due to injury in the round of 32 to Corey Smith of Montana State.
In main draw doubles No. 9 seeded Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano defeated Ricardo Campos and Michael Eraso of BYU, 8-5. Jacobs and Suriano will face No. 5 seeded Gustave Diep and Eduardo Salas of New Mexico State in the round of 16 tomorrow at 8 a.m.
Also advancing to the round of 16 are Eilers and Alex Golding after topping David Cysneiros and Raydner Ramos of Montana, 8-1. Eilers and Golding will see Conor Berg and Joe Wood of New Mexico tomorrow.
In consolation singles No. 25 seeded Suriano was defeated in the third round qualifier by Eraso of BYU, 6-4, 6-0.
Golding fell to Joe Wood of New Mexico, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, in third round qualifier.
Mamedov will face No. 1 seeded David Simson of Denver tomorrow in the third round.
