LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the first day of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships held at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Senior Phillip Eilers advanced to the round of 32 in main draw singles and doubles.
No. 3 seeded Eilers advanced to the round of 64 after receiving a bye in the round of 128. In the round of 64 Eilers defeated Carl Kuschke of Montana, 7-6, 6-2. Eilers will face No. 25 seeded Matej Stakne of New Mexico State tomorrow in the round of 32 beginning at 12 p.m.
Dmytro Mamedov advanced to the round of 64 topping Nate Gross of Iowa State, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 128. In the round of 64 Mamedov defeated Andrew Landwerlen of Denver, 6-3, 6-2, and will face No. 9 seeded Corey Smith in the round of 32.
In doubles the teams of No. 9 seeded Stephen Jacobs and Benito Suriano along with No. 4 seeded Eilers and Alex Golding will play in the round of 32 tomorrow after receiving a bye in the round of 64. Jacobs and Suriano will see Ricardo Campos and Michael Eraso of BYU, while Eilers and Golding will take on David Cysneiros and Raydner Ramos of Montana beginning at 8 a.m.
No. 25 seeded Golding fell in the round of 128 to Fabio Biasion of Denver, 7-6, 6-1, placing him in the consolation bracket. Golding defeated Attila Toth of UNLV, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round advancing him to the second round to face David Flodberg of Northern Arizona tomorrow.
In the round of 128 No. 25 seeded Suriano was defeated by Simon Unger of WSU, 6-4, 7-6. Suriano went on to the consolation first round and defeated Mike Facey of Montana in three rounds, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6. Suriano will see Esteban Ferrero of Montana State in the second round beginning at 9 a.m.
Jacobs also advanced to the second consolation round topping Matt Neeld of New Mexico, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. Jacobs will face Landwerlen in the second round.
