Two Utah Men's Tennis Players Advance To Quarterfinals

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team advanced two singles players to the quarterfinal round after the first day of the University of Utah Intercollegiate held at Liberty Park Tennis Center. Utah's Eilers and Jacobs advanced through two rounds of play to reach the quarterfinals.
No. 1 seeded Eilers defeated Michael Eraso of BYU, 6-1, 7-6(3), during the first round of 32. In the round of 16 Eilers topped Ricardo Campos of Weber State, 6-4, 6-2. Eilers will face No. 5 seeded Roman Warias of BYU tomorrow during the quarterfinal round beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Jacobs defeated David Hintze of Weber State, 7-5, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16 where he won in three sets against No. 7 seeded Cassidy Mears of BYU, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In the quarterfinals Jacobs will face No. 2 seeded Thomas Shubert of BYU.
Freshman Alex Golding advanced after the round of 32 topping Mike Gilliland of Boise State, 6-2, 6-1. In the round of 16 Golding fell to Warias, 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Dmytro Mamedov fell to No. 4 seeded Jakob Asplund of Utah State in the round of 32, 7-5, 6-0. Mamedov went on to compete in singles consolation advancing after a default due to injury by Daniel Hwang of BYU, advancing Mamedov to the quarterfinal round of consolation where he will face Nate Ballam of USU tomorrow.
No. 8 seeded Benito Suriano advanced after the round of 32 topping Nate Ballam of USU, 7-5, 6-0. Suriano fell in the round of 16 to Spencer Smith of BYU, 6-2, 6-1.
Jason Smits defeated Cole Paterson of WSU, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, during the round of 32 before falling to Urbina, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 16.
The Utes will being doubles tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The doubles team of Suriano and Jacobs will face Campos and Eraso of BYU. Mamedov and Smits will take on Hintze and Paterson of WSU, and Eilers and Golding will go up against Henning Hipp and Spencer Marchant of WSU.
Taking place tomorrow will be quarterfinal singles, semifinal singles, round of 16 doubles, quarterfinal doubles, quarterfinal and semifinal singles consolation, and quarterfinal doubles consolation.
