Welcome to Roman's World. Periodically, this space will be used to post excerpts from the personal blog of Roman Margoulis, a freshman men's tennis player at the U. Roman came to Utah from Luxembourg this past summer and shares some interesting opinions and insights on American culture, college life and Utah Tennis.
Hi Everyone,
One more week went by without noticing it. Time just flies when you are having fun, or when you are busy all day long.
I can't say that I was having that much fun lately, even though I tried to enjoy every day. My body just longs for a break and for some days of sleep without waking up by the sound of the alarm, but Christmas is still very far away.
It is interesting to observe the guys on the team with time passing. First, there is almost nobody who doesn't have some kind of injury, so they all spend time with the trainer after practice. Luckily, I don't have anything, so I stopped hanging around in the trainer room and rather go back to the dorms and have a power nap instead. I also noticed that many guys have tired faces, and are a little more quiet or moody, but it's normal, since we have to write many midterms now and practice a lot, and the weather is changing. So basically, everyone is looking forward to the fall break, which starts this weekend.
Not too much happened during last week. I got to play doubles with my assistant coach, who had to jump in to make all of the 3 courts complete, and we recorded a win, to our great surprise. However, he still complains about some body parts hurting him. Hopefully he will recover to play doubles again this weekend.
Last Saturday's major experience was our lunch at Tucano's. It's a Brazilian restaurant, where you get the all you can eat formula for a very cheap price, and it's amazing. They bring different kinds of meat to your table, and you can choose how much of it you want. The variety is amazing. Plus, there is a huge salad bar, with FRESH vegetables, and Mozarella cheese, which I haven't eaten a while now, and missed a lot. Now, would I tell you all of this if there wasn't an interesting event that occurred while we were there?!
One of the `meat' servings looked strange, but I didn't understand what the waiter said, and assumed it was chicken. I took some, and suggested it to my roommate sitting right next to me. (And so you know, my roommate is allergic to fish.) He followed my advice, and took some parts of this "chicken". All of a sudden, I just saw him holding his hand in front of his mouth and asking where the bathroom was. Everyone on the table was laughing, and nobody really cared to tell him. He ended up getting directions to the bathroom and came back some minutes later, visibly relieved, and with a vengeful look in his eyes pointing in my direction. He accused me of almost having killed him. I will have to try some other tactic to get the room to myself I guess. We had a good laugh though...
Sunday was probably one of those days I enjoyed the most recently. I did nothing at all! It was raining all day, and I enjoyed every minute of being lazy. My conscience tried to tell me I should do something useful, but I silenced this thought by making phone calls and drinking Powerade. Now that I think about it, I'm addicted to Powerade. Not a day passes without me drinking at least a bottle. I think it's because there is just nothing else to drink which has an acceptable taste. We don't drink water out of bottles like most of you are used to, but from the fountain. To my European friends who don't know this system, it's very simple: you bow down, press the button, and water comes out, which you try to catch with your mouth. It's OK, but I wouldn't compare it to the tasty water we drink.
It's getting increasingly colder in the mornings, but our coaches have little pitty on us, and we still run at 6. Today, we had a repetition of the 6K run, where everyone had to beat his previous time. And so it happened, which is a small reward for our hard work, and proves that it's not in vain. I really start considering running a marathon with the preparation I have now, if only running was fun...
