SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis doubles team of Timmy Allin and Wes Hancock defeated Henning Hipp and Sascha Kiehne of Weber State by an 8-6 score Saturday to win the Utah Invitational Doubles Championship. Hancock also competed in the singles final, falling in three sets to Evan Urbina of BYU, 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4.
"It was very good to see the guys in competition this weekend," stated Assistant Coach Roeland Brateanu. "Unfortunately Wes came up a touch short today in singles, but he did a good job on winning the doubles title with Timmy. The main thing we need to improve most on is the way we finish our matches, making sure we end strong and don't give up big leads."
Both consolation brackets ended in BYU victories. In the singles consolation final, Travis Fillmore defeated Chris Williams, 6-4, 6-3. In the doubles consolation final, AJ Young and Urbina took down the tandem of Utah's CJ Adamson and Weber State's Doug Alves, 8-2.
Up next for the Utes, Hancock and Phillip Eilers will travel with head coach FD Robbins to Tulsa, Okla., to try to qualify for the singles main draw at the ITA All-American Championships, Oct. 1. The rest of the Utah men's tennis team will prepare for their next event, the ITA Regional Championships, held Oct. 15-19 in Las Vegas, Nev.
