SALT LAKE CITY- The Utah men's tennis team will compete for both the singles and doubles championships at the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament Saturday at Liberty Park. Utah's Wes Hancock advanced through two more rounds of play to reach Saturday's championship play.
"Our hard work earned us spots in the finals," commented Assistant Coach Roeland Brateanu. "Stephen Jacobs set a great example playing a hard, tough match. Regardless of his loss I am proud of the way he competed and hung in there. The doubles matches went well. We had two of our teams play each other with Timmy Allin and Wes Hancock moving to the finals tomorrow."
No. 3-seeded Hancock will face No. 4-seeded Evan Urbina of BYU in the singles finals Saturday. Hancock advanced to the finals after defeating teammate Othman Ouariti, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and Henning Hipp of Weber State, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinal action.
Jacobs played a tough match against No. 4-seeded Hipp, but fell in the quarterfinal round, 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-5. Utah's Phillip Eliers withdrew from competition due to illness, advancing No. 7-seeded Sascha Kiehne of Weber State to the semifinal.
In doubles action, the No. 3-seeded team of Hancock and Allin defeated Ouariti and Benito Suriano, 9-7, and are set to play Hipp and Kiehne of Weber State in the championship match.
The consolation draw singles saw Travis Fillmore of BYU and Chris Williams of Weber State to the finals. Utah's Jason Smits was defeated, 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 by Williams.
CJ Adamson will team up with Doug Alves of Weber State to play in the consolation draw doubles finals after winning against Alex Thatcher and Jordan Barlow of Utah State 8-5. AJ Young and Urbina of BYU also advanced, defeating Brandon Nilson and Matt Braithwaite of Utah State, 8-4.
The singles finals will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by the main draw doubles, consolation singles and consolation doubles final matches.
