SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team saw four of its singles players and four doubles teams advance to the quarterfinal round on Day 1 of the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament Thursday.
"It was exciting to see everyone play in a match situation," said Assistant Coach Roeland Brateanu. "Everyone competed hard in both their singles and doubles matches. I thought it was a good learning experience for everyone. If we continue to compete hard tomorrow we will come up with some more wins and get some more experience under our belt."
Utah was led by No. 2-seeded Phillip Eiliers who defeated Chris Williams of Weber State, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 in the Round of 32. He then posted a win over Gregory Batrakov of BYU, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.
No. 3-seeded Wes Hancock won his opening round against Doug Alves of Weber State, 6-0, 6-1, moving on to beat Mike Banks of Utah State in the Round of 16, 6-1, 6-4. Hancock will be taking on teammate Ouariti Othman in the quarterfinals.
Othman earned his place in the quarterfinals with a Round of 32 victory against Bryan Marchant of Utah State, 6-3, 6-1, then came from behind in a Round of 16 win over Cassidy Mears of BYU, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. The fourth Ute to advance to the quarterfinals in singles play was Stephen Jacobs, who moved on to the Round of 16 after defeating Travis Fillmore of BYU, 6-3, 7-6(2). Jacobs then went on to post a win over teammate John Taylor in the Round of 16, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2).
Hipp Henning and Sascha Kiehne of Weber State, along with Roman Warias and Evan Urbina of BYU, also advanced to the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Utah's Benito Suriano and Ouariti led the way in doubles with a shut out of Weber State's Travis Covington and Cole Paterson, 8-0, in the Round of 16. The No. 2-seeded doubles team of Eilers and Taylor earned their quarterfinal spot by defeating Matt Brainthwaite and Nilson 8-3. No. 3-seeded Allin and Hancock earned a victory over Batrakov and Warias of BYU, 8-1 to reach the quarters, while Jason Smits and Jacobs teamed up to beat Mike Banks and Amit Maharaj of Utah State, 9-8(2).
The teams of Mears and Travis Fillmore (BYU), Chris Williams and Marchant (Utah State), Kiehne and Hipp (Weber State), and Marchant and Joseph Asplund (Utah State) also advance to the doubles quarterfinals.
In the singles consolation draw, Smits advanced to the quarterfinal round with a win against Covington, 6-2, 6-4).
