SALT LAKE CITY - The defending Mountain West Conference champion University of Utah men's tennis team reinforced its 2008 fall lineup with junior transfer Phillip Eilers (Salzgitter, Germany), the team announced earlier this month. Eilers joins the Utes after two years at Indiana.
"We are very fortunate to have Phillip as a transfer," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We expect good things out of him. He has established himself as our number one player and is getting along very well with the team. Phillip is a great team player and sets a good example for his teammates on the court and in the classroom."
Eilers began his collegiate tennis career at Indiana, coming to the United States from Salzgitter. After redshirting the 2006-07 season, he saw his first collegiate action in 2007-08, posting an overall record of (21-18) in singles and (22-10) in doubles. In tournament play, Eilers competed at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, highlighted by his win against #62 Roy Sichel of Charlotte (6-4, 6-1). He also reached the the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships, then went on to the Clemson Winter Shootout where he posted records of (4-0) in singles and (4-1) in doubles.
Eilers paired up with Indiana teammate Lachlan Ferguson during the regular season and posted doubles wins against No. 30-ranked Jason Jung and Mike Srocaynski of Michigan, 8-4, and No.59-ranked Billy Gardner and Alex Forger of Michigan State, 9-7. Eilers went 3-1 in the No. 1 singles position and won four consecutive Big Ten singles matches from April 6-19, each in straight sets.
"When I came over to the United States it was my goal to play tennis and get a good education," said Eilers. "I really enjoyed the team at Indiana, but after a while I began to feel I needed to make a change. After I had contacted a number of teams, the Utah coaches responded quickly and it seemed like a good fit, so I decided to make the move. I feel very welcomed by the coaches and my teammates, and I like the atmosphere during our practices. It is great so far. I am looking forward to this year and trying to help Utah win another MWC championship and reach the NCAA tournament."
Eilers and the Utes play their first action of the season Sept. 25-27 at the University of Utah Intercollegiate Tournament.
