BOZEMAN, MONT. - The University of Utah women's cross country team ran in the Montana State Invitational on Saturday. The three-mile race was scored in dual format with Utah scoring 2-4. The Utes defeated Montana State (24-31) and Utah Valley University (27-29). In the traditional scoring, Utah tallied 111 points to place them fifth out of the eight competing teams.
Senior Chelsea DiGrazia crossed the finish line first for the Utes for the second time this season. She ran a steady race to finish fourth overall with a finish time of 17:21.
The Utes closed up the time gap on Saturday with their second through fifth runners' finish times. The second runner from Utah to cross the line was Janett Ern. A senior and native to Ahlsdorf, Germany, Ern finished 18:00 flat with a 10th place finish overall.
Newcomer Carly Selleck ran past six runners in the last mile to finish 22nd overall with an 18:10 finish time. Rachel Perkins also stepped it up in the last mile and clocked an 18:31 finish time and 36th overall.
Although Samantha Gaffney pushed herself in the last leg of the race, she didn't get the start she was looking for. The Ute finished with an 18:38 time and a 39th overall finish. The Utes clocked a 90:40 top 5 finish with an elapsed time of 1:17.
Kellie Anderson crossed the line 43rd overall with a finish time of 18:43. Alexis Davis had a late start on Saturday, but finished with a 19:20 time and 51st overall. Coming in right on Davis' heels was teammate Sydney Osmun. The Ute crossed the line 52nd with a 19:22 finish time.
Coach Kepler's Thoughts
"I am very pleased with our top three finishes today. Our second group opened up too conservatively and our four through eight runners didn't have a chance to catch up. We still made large improvements from last week though," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "We need to keep working on closing our gap which was 1:17 today. We have made improvements each week. Our main focus is for November at the conference championship, but next week we'll be heading into our big meets and we'll need to be prepared. We'll be running our top runners next week at Stanford."
Coming Up for the Ute Runners
The University of Utah women's cross country team will head to Palo Alto, Calif. on September 27 for the Stanford Invitational next weekend.
