Laramie, Wyo. - The University of Utah women's tennis team, currently ranked No. 54 in the nation, went undefeated this weekend and finished out with a 4-1 win over Wyoming. The Utes improved to a 4-1 conference record and are 13-6 for the season.
"I thought the team stepped up considering Evgenia was out of the line-up," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We were pretty dominant and it was good that Leigh got the clinching win at the No. 5 spot."
Evgenia Kryuchkova was out on Sunday with an injury, causing a last minute shift in the line-up, but the Utes still prevailed. Elizabeth Ferris, currently ranked No. 60 in the nation, took on Corina Lazar at the top spot. The Ute allowed minimal points from the Cowboy as she slammed an easy 6-2, 6-3 win over Lazar.
Emily Kwok moved into the No. 2 position on Sunday to face Rebecca Berger from Wyoming. The Ute stepped up for the challenge to exceed the expectations and earn a powerful 6-2, 6-2 win over the Cowboy.
At the No. 3 spot, Erin Monson stepped in to face Carly Van Hollen from the Cowboys' roster. The Ute dominated the court as she hit a 6-2, 6-2 near flawless win over Van Hollen.
The Utes were up 3-0 when Leigh Walsh finished up at the No. 5 spot, where she faced Wyoming's Michelle Brown. The Ute took the first set easily with a 6-1 win before Brown put up a fight in an attempt to prevent another win by Utah. The Cowboy competed hard in the second set, but Walsh settled the battle to earn a 6-1, 7-5 win over Brown.
The only loss on Sunday came at the No. 4 spot. Karine Bourdages competed hard against Wyoming's Sarah Summerfield, but wasn't able to seal the deal. Summerfield took the first set with a 6-1 victory, but Bourdages came back with a 6-3 win in the second to send them into a tie breaker set. The two players kept pushing eachother on the courts with each hit as strong as the next, but Summerfield took the lead to earn a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win over Bourdages.
"It was a great weekend with a sweep that puts us 4-1 in the league," said Iandolo. "This is great for us as we head into next weekend's matches."
