FORT WORTH, TEXAS - The fourth seeded University of Utah women's tennis team fell in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships to top seeded TCU on Friday. The Horned Frogs swept the match 4-0 over Utah and will head into the finals on Saturday against No. 2 seed UNLV. The Utes went on a spectacular run this year, ending the season with a 15-9 record.
"Even though today wasn't how we wanted to finish out the season, we still had a good run this year," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We had a good opportunity to take the doubles point today, and I think it would have been a lot different if we had. That gave them [TCU] a lot of momentum going into singles. Liz [Ferris] and Emily [Kwok] played well in doubles, and I think they will have a good opportunity to go to NCAAs."
In doubles play, TCU's Nina Munch-Soegaard and Maria Babanova led off with an 8-3 victory over Leigh Walsh and Karine Bourdages at the No. 3 position. At the top position, 38th ranked Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok tied up doubles play with an 8-5 upset over 16th ranked TCU tandem of Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska.
At the No. 2 spot, Andrea Maughan and Erin Monson led 7-4 over Idunn Hertzberg and Katariina Tuohimaa. The Utes were ready to take the win and doubles point over TCU, but the Horned Frog duo stepped it up and won four consecutive games to force the match into a tie breaker. The Ute duo was unable to shut down Hertzberg and Tuohimaa's momentum in a timely fashion, allowing the Horned Frogs to walk away with a 9-8(5) victory.
In singles play, TCU came out ready to finish out on a high note and defend their home courts. With a 1-0 lead, the Frogs got right down to business, pulling out three matches in straight sets to seal the win.
Kewa Nichols from the Frogs began the scoring with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Utah's Bourdages at the No. 5 position. At the No. 6 spot, TCU's Hertzberg followed up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Maughan from the Utes to give the Frogs a 3-0 lead.
At the top spot, 60th ranked Ferris took on 61st ranked Munch-Soegaard for a strong match. The Ute pushed herself as hard as she could in an attempt to save the Utes from a sweep, but couldn't quite overpower the Frog. Munch-Soegaard defeated Ferris 6-4, 6-4 to give TCU an overall win 4-0 over the Utes in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
