FORT WORTH, TEXAS - The fourth seeded University of Utah women's tennis team ousted the fifth seeded BYU Cougars on Thursday during the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships. Utah posted a 4-0 shutout over BYU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on TCU's campus. The Utes improved to 15-8 overall this season with the win.
"It is great to have a 2-0 winning streak over our biggest in-state rivals. It was also a nice revenge for Liz to defeat her opponent after last week's loss," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "We are looking forward to our match against TCU tomorrow."
Utah took the high road early on by earning the doubles point over the Cougars. 38th ranked Emily Kwok and Elizabeth Ferris began with an 8-5 victory over 48th-ranked BYU duo of Anastasia Surkova and Jennifer Miccoli at the top spot.
Finishing up for the Utes was Andrea Maughan and Erin Monson at the No. 2 spot. The Ute duo took on Kristina Doerr and Ellie Carney for an intense battle. The two teams fought hard to earn the win since BYU tied up doubles with a win at No. 3 spot. Monson and Maughan dug deep towards the end of the match to pull out a 9-7 victory to give Utah a 1-0 lead with the doubles point.
Following doubles play, the Utes posted three straight-set victories in a row in singles play. Monson led off with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Chie Hayasaka at the No. 3 position to put the Utes up 2-0 in the match.
Leigh Walsh followed up with a 6-3, 6-4 well executed victory over Elizaveta Ezhova from the Cougars at the No. 4 slot to continue Utah's winning stride.
At the top spot, 60th ranked Elizabeth Ferris was given another shot at 53rd ranked Surkova. The Ute fell to the Cougar last week, so was looking for revenge in the conference tournament on Thursday. Ferris fought long and hard to ensure a clean victory over Surkova this week. After struggling a bit in the first set, Ferris found her rhythm and shut down the Cougar 7-6(4), 6-3 to give Utah the automatic 4-0 win.
The Utes now have a 2-0 lead over the Cougars, who previously had the upper hand to a sixteen year winning streak.
The Utes will meet No. 1 seeded TCU in the semifinals on Friday at 2:00 p.m. CDT.
