SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team put together a dominant, 6-1 victory over BYU Saturday. On Thursday, less than one week later, the Utes will have to face the Cougars again in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tennis Championships.
The MWC Championships get under way Wednesday in Fort Worth, Texas on the campus of TCU. Utah is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, while BYU is the No. 5 seed. Thursday's Ute-Cougar clash is slated for 2 p.m. CDT. Utah comes into the tournament with a 14-8 overall record and a 5-3 mark in MWC action.
"Clearly the Mountain West Conference Tournament is important, but playing our in-state rivals at the tournament is even bigger," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Hopefully we can continue to succeed against them like we did last weekend."
TCU enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed, after posting a perfect 8-0 record in Mountain West Conference regular-season play. UNLV and New Mexico were tied for No. 2 in the regular season with a 6-2 mark, but the Rebels took the tie-breaker over the Lobos. San Diego State is the No. 6 seed, while Colorado State, Wyoming and Air Force round out the remainder of the league. Wyoming and Air Force meet in an opening round match Wednesday.
Should Utah defeat BYU, it would move on to Friday's semifinals against the winner of TCU's match vs. either Air Force or Wyoming. The championship match is slated for 2 p.m. CDT Saturday.
