SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah men's tennis (64) will close out their regular season this Friday with a home match against UC Santa Barbara (65). The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. MDT at Liberty Park Tennis Center in Salt Lake City (1100 South and 550 East). The Utes will be honoring seniors Zach Ganger and Miron Mann at the match.
"We are looking forward to playing a tough UC Santa Barbara team. It is a good opportunity to beat another ranked team in preparation of our conference tournament," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "It will be the last home match for our seniors Miron and Zach and we are looking forward to sending them off with a victory."
THE UTES
The University of Utah is on a winning stride after clinching a portion of the regular-season Mountain West Conference Title. The Utes have earned back a national ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this week, coming in at 64-th in the country.
Last week the Utes fought for wins over No. 36 TCU, UNLV, and BYU. All three matches came down to a final singles match in which the Utes clinched the victory 4-3 each time. With last week's victories, the Utes are now 13-9 for the season and went 5-1 in conference play.
Ganger will lead the Utes for the final time at a home match on Friday. The Ute received a No. 104 ranking this week from the ITA after defeating No. 36 Cosmin Cotet from TCU 6-4, 6-1. Ganger went undefeated in conference play and compiled a 25-8 singles record this year.
In doubles play, Ganger and Mann have tallied a 16-4 record this season. The Ute duo also went undefeated in conference play, posting wins over Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet from TCU (8-4), David Campbell and Elliot Wronski from UNLV (8-4), and Jonathan Sanchez and AJ Young from BYU (8-4).
UC SANTA BARBARA
The Gauchos are currently ranked 65-th in the country. UCSB will be on a three-day road trip this week, to face the Utes, BYU, and Boise State. Currently the team is 11-7 on the season and 4-1 in the Big West.
Last week, No. 14 Pepperdine gave UCSB a run for their money. The Waves overpowered the Gauchos 6-1 to end their two-match winning streak.
The Gauchos are led by sophomore Philip Therp in both singles and doubles play. Therp has tallied a 15-14 singles record and a 10-13 doubles record. The Gaucho teams up with Jack Hui for doubles play.
