SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team earned back a national ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) this week, being listed as 64-th in the country. Senior Zach Ganger was also welcomed back into the singles rankings after falling out almost seven months ago. The Ute is now ranked No. 104 in the country.
After having a tough regular season, the Utes went into conference play with everything to prove. They were determined to clinch the title this year, and they did just that. After going 5-1 in conference play, the men's tennis team earned a share of the Mountain West Conference title along with TCU and New Mexico.
Last week the team went undefeated posting wins over 36-th ranked TCU, UNLV, and BYU in Provo, Utah. The Utes ended each match with an intense and electrifying 4-3 victory. After two months of going unranked, the men's tennis team has worked hard to earn back a national ranking. The Utes are 13-9 in the regular season with a No. 64 national ranking.
Ganger, a native to Jacksonville, Fla., also returns to the rankings this week. The Ute was previously ranked No. 33 in the Preseason Poll in September 2007, but dropped out after the first official rankings came out early in January 2008.
Ganger has tallied an impressive 25-8 singles record this year, including two recent wins over ranked conference opponents: No. 36 Cosmin Cotet (TCU) and No. 98 Elliot Wronski (UNLV). The Ute plays consistently at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner Miron Mann. Last week the Ute also earned co-Mountain West Conference men's Player of the Week with Mann.
