OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Utah's swimming and diving team completed the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships on Saturday. The Ute women moved up a spot to finish third with 579 points, while the men placed sixth.
In the final day of competition Utah's 400 free relay team set a new school record with a time of 3:22.48, placing second. The team consisted of Natalie Edge, Annie VanLeeuwen, Kristina Evans and Jennifer Fredsall. Their time was an NCAA-B provisional qualifying time. Edge won the 100 free with a time of 49.76, which is .1 seconds off the school record. Her time is also an NCAA-B qualifying time.
Beth Gunderson swam an NCAA-B qualifying time in the 200 back when she swam a 2:00.80 time. Melissa Helmers added a fifth-place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 17:03.53.
Fredsall finished third in the 200 fly (2:03.46), while teammate Michelle Blair followed her in fourth in a time of 2:03.70. Shannon McQueen placed fourth in the 200 back, swimming a time of 2:02.59. Adrienne Coburn and Caitlin Tidwell finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200 breast. Coburn swam a time of 2:19.78 and Tidwell finished in 2:20.64.
Diver Kwan Ling Yu won the platform diving by five points. Yu scored 218.60 points to give Utah its first diving win of the championships.
On the men's side, Spencer Peterson swam a lifetime best in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.35, which was good for seventh-place. In the same event, John Baque placed ninth. George Evans placed ninth in the 100 free with a time of 44.93. In the 200 fly Adam Oliver placed ninth with his time of 2:50.91.
The 400 free relay team of Garret Beaman, Tanner Folster, Evans and Marco Ferraro placed fourth. They swam a time of 3:00.60, which was the best time of the season for the Utes in the event.
"Our team did fantastic this weekend," states head coach Greg Winslow. "The women were able to sneak up on Wyoming on the last day to finish third which was a good accomplishment. I'm proud of our team and especially the seniors. They showed great leadership and have been great through the whole season and adjusting to a new coach. This group has been terrific and meant a lot to the Utah program."
The UNLV men won their fourth consecutive Mountain West Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championship with 800 team points, while the BYU women won their seventh overall women's team title in nine years with 763 points.
For the men, BYU finished second with 642.50 points, followed by Wyoming (629), Air Force (531), TCU (472) and Utah (352.50).
On the women's side, UNLV followed the Cougars with 622 points. Utah was next at 579, followed by Wyoming (574.50), Colorado State (359), TCU (276.50), New Mexico (262), San Diego State (161) and Air Force (151).
