SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team over powered in-state rivals Utah State on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep. The Utes rallied back after a tough loss to Denver to destroy the Aggies on the courts.
The Utes sealed the doubles point early on with No. 41 Emily Kwok and Elizabeth Ferris tallying an 8-1 win over Bridgette Strickland and Breanna Harris at the top spot. Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan finished up quickly as well with an 8-2 win over Taylor Perry and Jennifer Johnson at the No. 3 spot.
At the No. 2 spot, Leigh Walsh and Evgenia Kryuchkova were up 7-3 and about to hit the match point, when Britney Watts and Hailey Swenson stepped up their game and push for two more game wins. However, the Utes kept their cool and executed their shots well to take the win at 8-5.
The Aggies were no match for the Utes in singles play. Coach Mat Iandolo had Ferris and Maughan sit out the match, which allowed for Dee-Dee Nelson to compete against her old team.
Highlights from the match include two complete sweeps: one at the No. 2 spot by Kwok over Hailey Swenson, and one at the No. 3 spot where Monson took on her old teammate Bridgette Strickland.
The closest Utah State got to being ahead was at the No. 1 spot where Breanna Harris was able to win two games in each set. Kryuchkova shut her down at 6-2, 6-2 to end the match.
