SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team had a rough start today against No. 39 Denver at Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes played hard, but couldn't seal the win, falling to the Pioneers 4-3.
The Utes started off Saturday afternoon with fiery spirits in doubles play. At the No. 2 spot, Leigh Walsh and Evgenia Kryuchkova took on Kvla Iwinski and Kaja Smole from the Pioneers' squad. The Utes pounded out an 8-3 win to get things started for the Utes. At the No. 1 slot, Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok (41) took on Julia Bauregger and Mallory Voelker. The Ute duo kept the Pioneer duo on their toes, but couldn't keep up in the end. Bauregger and Voelker took the win at 8-6.
The doubles point was clinched by Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan at the No. 3 slot. The Ute duo took on Annette Aksdal and Kaja Smole from Denver for an intense battle. Monson and Maughan stepped up their game and hit a 9-7 win to earn Utah the doubles point.
Monson continued her stride in singles play at the No. 4 spot against Bhavani Tirumurti. The Ute slammed a 6-0, 6-3 win to give Utah a 2-0 lead. The top spots finished up next, but not in favor of Utah. No. 44 Ferris fell to Mallory Voelker from Denver 6-4, 7-6. At the No. 2 spot, Kryuchkova took on Annette Aksdal for a 7-5, 6-3 loss.
Kwok finished up at the No. 3 spot for a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Julia Bauregger to give Denver the lead at 3-2. Walsh played at the No. 5 spot on Saturday against Kaja Smole from the Pioneers. The Ute took the first set at 6-1, but Smole answered right back with a 6-1 win in the second set. Walsh dug down and out-skilled the Pioneer in the third set to take the win at 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
With the match on the line, Utah's Bourdages and Denver's Iwinski were left to battle for the win. The Ute took the first set at 6-3, but couldn't continue her momentum in the second set. Iwinski took the second set at 6-1 to challenge the Ute. Bourdages started out the third set on a high note to pulling ahead 5-3, but Iwinski had the final say. The Pioneer took the win at 3-6, 6-1, 7-6; giving Denver the win at 4-3.\
