PULLMAN, WASH. - The University of Utah women's tennis team (66) recovered on Saturday after a lost to Washington State for a 4-3 win over Nevada. The Utes swept doubles play for the second day in a row, but was able to seal the deal on Saturday over the Nevada Wolf pack.
The Nevada Wolves challenged the Utes in doubles play, but the squad held strong. Ferris and Kwok finished with an 8-5 win over Mizyuk and Dinh at the No. 1 spot. Maughan and Monson stepped in for an 8-6 win over Hall and De Vrye. Finishing up doubles play for the Utes was Kryuchkova and Walsh at the No. 2 spot. The Ute duo defeated Bailly and Tan 8-7.
In singles play, Florence De Vrye stepped in at the No. 3 spot to challenge Emily Kwok. The Ute fell 7-5, 6-0 to tie up the score to 1-1. Leigh Walsh faced Lais Ogata at the No. 5 spot for a two-set battle. The Wolf took the first set 6-3. Walsh tried to battle back in the second set, but was unable to pull out the win. Ogata took the match at 6-3, 7-5.
At the No.2 spot, Evgenia Kryuchkova had a rough day on the courts as she fell 6-1, 6-4 to Caroline Bailly from Nevada, giving the Wolves a 3-1 lead. ,p> Erin Monson stepped in at the No. 4 spot to face Alice Hall. The Wolf took the first set at 6-4, but the Ute came back to slam a 6-3 win in the second set. In the tie-breaker, Monson pushed herself to overtake Hall 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Elizabeth Ferris stepped in at the top spot to face No. 48 Maria Mizyuk from the Wolf pack. The Ute took the first set 7-5, but Mizyuk pushed herself harder in the second set to pull out a 7-5 win in the second set. Ferris pulled herself together to settle the match with a 6-3 win in the tie-breaker.
The match was determined by Karine Bourdages at the No. 6 slot. The Ute faced Ly-Huong Dinh for a hard fought straight set win. The Ute took the first set at 6-4, but struggled in the second set to keep her control over the match. Dinh challenged her, but Bourdages managed her nerves well to take the win at 6-4, 7-5.
