SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah volleyball team earned the 12th national seed in the 2008 NCAA Volleyball Tournament, it was announced by the NCAA Sunday. First and second-round matches of the Seattle, Wash., regional will be held in Clemson, S.C., Dec. 5-6. The Utes face Furman in the first round Friday at 3 p.m. MT, while Clemson hosts Tennessee in the other first-round match at Jurvey Arena.
"We have been a good road team all season, especially late in the year," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "I'm confident that we can play well regardless of where we have to go. It doesn't really matter where we play, it's the NCAA Tournament."
The Utes were ranked 21st in the latest Bison/AVCA Coaches Poll and finished their regular season 24-5 overall and won the third Mountain West Conference regular-season championship in school history. Utah won the Pacific Bankers Classic title this weekend with wins over Nevada and Pacific. The Utes are enjoying a season-long nine-match win streak and have won 16 of their last 17 matches overall.
"This has been the best senior year I could possibly have," 2008 MWC Co-Player of the Year Lori Baird said. "I'm excited to have a great seed. We never expected it, but we're glad to have and we'll take everything we can get."
