SALT LAKE CITY - Utah All-America kicker/punter Louie Sakoda has been named one of 13 finalists for the 2008 Wuerffel Trophy, which honors the college football player who best combines community service, academics and athletics.
Sakoda is a semifinalist for both the Lou Groza and Ray Guy awards and was named as the Midseason All-America placekicker by CBSSports.com, The Sporting News and Rivals.com. He is among the national leaders in field goal percentage (19-of-21, 90.5%) and in punting average (41.5).
An outstanding student, Sakoda is a Draddy Trophy finalist and a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete (which came with an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship). The marketing major is a three-time Mountain West Conference scholar athlete, carrying a 3.73 grade point average, and is a three-time Dean's List honoree. He is also a top-10 finalist for the Lowe's Senior Class Award, is a two-time Lou Groza `Star of the Week' and has been named the Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Week four times this season.
Sakoda is the vice president of Utah's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He is involved in Team Lincoln, which organizes activities for at-risk children. He has also worked with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to raise money for humanitarian efforts around the world and he participated in a campaign with the governor's office to combat drunk driving.
A committee that includes the Wuerffel Trophy national directors and selection committee members will vote on the finalists later this month, and the winner will be formally announced on December 9.
