LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Utah women's swimming and diving team won 12 out of 16 events on Saturday at UNLV, defeating the Rebels 179-121, while the men's team fell to UNLV, 196-98.
Natalie Edge and Whitney Lopus each finished in first place in three events. Edge came away with wins in the 50 free (24.06) and the 100 free (51.76), while Lopus placed first in the 200 free (1:50.43) and the 100 fly (54.97), while Jen Fredsall took second (57.66) in the event. Edge and Lopus were also on Utah's winning 400 free relay team with Annie VanLeeuwen and Megan Raby (3:28.54).
VanLeeuewen had a great meet, earning points for the team in the 100 breast (1:05.81), finishing second in the 50 free (24.17), and also helped the 400 medley relay team finish first (3:51.87) together with Beth Gunderson, Chelsea Peterson, and Hannah Caron.
Other first place finishers for Utah were Gunderson in the 100 back (57.67), Lauren Hewson in the 100 breast (1:05.80), Caron in the 200 fly (2:05.45) where Lopus (2:05.61) and Jana Willsey (2:08.59) finished in second and third place, respectively.
Freshman Sarah Cox finished first in the 200 back (2:03.13) and Maiya Otsuka in the 200 breast (2:20.94). Anna Braszkiewicz continued her dominance on the 3-meter dive, remaining undefeated with a top score of 253.57.
On the men's side, Vlas Lezin was the lone first place finisher for the Utah men's swimming and diving team. Lezin finished first in the 100 back (51.62) as well as second in the 200 fly (50.68).
Adam Oliver scored eight points for the Utah men's team, placing second in the 1000 free (9:26.06) and second in the 500 free (4:37.48).
The men had great races in the 200 free, the 100 breast and the 200 breast. Marco Ferraro finished second in the 200 free (1:42.67), Simon Oberholzer placed third (1:43.07) and Eric Murray was in fourth place for Utes (1:43.11), earning nine points for the team.
In the 100 breast event, John Baque finished in second (57.41), less than a half a second behind the first-place finisher. Michel DeCarolis finished in third in the 100 breast (57.97) and Tim Leonhart was fourth (1:02.48). The 200 breast also saw Baque in second (2:04.96) and DeCarolis in third (2:09.25) with Leonhart placing fourth (2:17.56).
Oberholzer continued to score points for the team, finishing second in the 200 fly (1:51.68) and third in the 200 fly (51.21) as well as helping the 400 free relay team finish second (3:07.36) along with George Evans, Ferraro, and Oliver.
The Utes take the next two weeks off to prepare for the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The invitational starts December 5-7.
