SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team is heading to California this week to take on the San Diego State Aztecs. The meet will be Saturday at 3 p.m. PST at the Aztec Aquaplex.
This week: The Utes go into Saturday's meet coming off a great weekend where they upset Washington Friday and held them off on Saturday. They also were able to defeat Boise State decisively twice, putting the women at 4-0 to start the season.
Scouting San Diego State: This will be the first meet of the year for San Diego State. Finishing in eighth place at the Mountain West Conference Championships last year, the Aztecs are looking for their first win against the Utes since 1999. An incoming group of athletes look to help the team get a win this year. Headlined by NCAA Zone qualifiers Caitlin Atkinson and Megan Flanagan as well as transfer Alexandra Barstad, the Aztec divers are looking to be one of the biggest oppositions to a Ute victory. Barstad transfered from the Univirsity of Minnesota, where she was part of the diving team that helped the Golden Gophers reach a conference championship last year.
Winslow on the Aztecs: "We are really looking forward to [Saturday]. San Diego State has a great freshman class coached by second-year coach Mike Schrader. It will be a great challenge for us and we are looking forward to opening up Mountain West Competition," Utah head coach Greg Winslow said.
Ute Notes: The Utes are looking for an eighth straight win against the Aztecs. Whitney Lopus in the fly events, Hannah Caron and Natalie Edge in the freestyle events, and Anna Braszkiewicz in the diving events will be expected to compete at the same level as last weekend to keep the Utah win winning streak alive.
Coming up: Both the men and women will be hosting Univeristy of Denver on Saturday, November 1st in Salt Lake City. Last year, Denver came to Utah and walked away with a victory against both the Utah men and women. This year looks to be just as tough, with nine returning upperclassmen for the men and seven for the women coming back for Denver.
