BOISE, Idaho- The University of Utah women's tennis team posted four singles wins and one doubles victory Saturday on day two at the Jack Taylor Invitational in Boise. Erin Monson and Anastasia Putilina defeated Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk, 8-6, avenging a finals loss at the BYU Invitational.
"Today was a step forward," Said head coach Mat Iandolo. "To battle a top 40 team like Washington State without one of our best players in the lineup, and have the outcome be dead even, says a lot about how the team responded after yesterday's performance."
In singles play, Putilina beat out WSU's Ekaterina Kamendova in a three-set match, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Karine Bourdages defeated Bianca Selaru (WSU), 6-3, 7-6 (1). Andrea Maughan was victorious against Maria Nicholas (WSU) 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (2). Freshman Lisa Johnson topped WSU's Jessica Gomez, 6-4, 6-2, rounding out the Utes singles victories.
The doubles teams of Lexi Provancha and Maughan, Leigh Walsh and Johnson, and Bourdages and Julie Tukuafu all fell to Boise State opponents.
Four other Utes fell in singles play despite a good effort lead by Monson's three set battle against WSU's Aleksandra Oprea , where she fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Walsh was unable to come up with a win against Elisabeth Fournier(WSU), losing 6-2, 6-3. Provancha could not top WSU's Aleksandra Cekic, falling 6-1, 6-1. Tukuafu was deafeated by Rocio Frej from BSU, 6-0, 6-2.
The last day of play begins Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
