SALT LAKE CITY- Lexi Provancha and Lisa Johnson The University of Utah women's tennis team advanced through qualifying play Wednesday at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in Salt Lake City. They will join three of their teammates in main draw play Thursday.
"Today was a good performance," said head coach Mat Iandolo. " I am really proud of Lexi, she beat a very good player from Boise State who historically we have had trouble with. Tomorrow we have five players in main draw singles and four strong teams in main draw doubles, this is a very positive thing for our program. Tomorrow we have the doubles team of Erin Monson and Anastasia Putilina seeded at No. 4, and Anastasia is also seeded in singles play. We are really excited and looking forward to competing through the weekend."
Provancha started the day strong with a solid showing in her first match against Maria Sotirchos of New Mexico defeating her, 7-5, 6-1. She had a stand out performance in her second match against Boise State's Jana Mackova. Provancha duked it out with Mackova in a two set match with a super tie breaker in lieu of a third set. Provancha fell in the first set 3-6, battled back in the second to win 7-6(4), and held off Mackova in the super tie breaker to win it 10-7.
Johnson defeated Carla Limon of Utah State, 6-1, 6-2. In her second round of play she fell to Natalia Salum of New Mexico State, 6-2, 6-2. However, due to a withdrawal Johnson has been reinserted into the main draw.
Thursday's main draw play will begin with doubles at will 8:00 a.m. followed by singles. In the doubles round of 64 the team of Andrea Maughan and Provancha will play Ekaterina Morosova and Yuliana Svistun of Nebraska, while Karine Bourdages and Johnson will play Aleksa Costa and Sophia Marks of NMSU. The Utah teams of Monson and Putilina and Evgenia Kryuchkova and Leigh Walsh both received a bye for the round of 64.
In singles play Provancha will face Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, Walsh takes on Lutfiana Budiharto of Wichita State, Putilina goes against Tabatha Knop of Northern Colorado, Monson plays Thalia Barriga of Tulsa, and Johnson squares off against Bianca Jochimsen of BSU.
In other qualifying singles matches Maughan topped Jana Albers of Nebraska in the round of 64, 6-3, 6-4. She fought hard in her second match against NMSU's Laura Boguet. She won the first set 7-5, but fell in the second set and super tie breaker, 6-2, 10-5. Julie Tukuafu was taken down by by Maria Martinez of KU, 6-3, 6-0. Dee Dee Nelson was defeated by Franziska Jendrian of Colorado, 6-0, 6-0. Finally, Bourdages fell to Mary Weatherholt of NU, 6-0, 6-2.
