PROVO, Utah - The Utah swimming and diving team was defeated by BYU on Thursday night. The women lost by a score of 190-110, while the men fell 189-100. The meet marks the end of the regular season for the Utes and now the focus turns to the Mountain West Conference Championships beginning on February 27.
"I'm impressed with the way our athletes swam tonight," comments head coach Greg Winslow. "Many of our swimmers had their best performances of the year and I'm proud of the way they fought."
The women completed the season with a record of 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the MWC. Ute Shannon McQueen won two events including the 100 back with a time of 57.70 and the 200 back in a time of 2:06.30. Utah also got a strong performance from Jennifer Fredsall winning the 100 fly in a time of 56.72, beating reigning MWC champion and All-American Angela Price for the victory. Caitlin Tidwell added a second-place finish in the 100 breast in a time of 1:05.84, which was a lifetime best for her.
For the men, the Utes were led by John Baque who won the 200 breast with a time of 2:07.41. George Evans placed second in the 200 free with his lifetime best time of 1:41.18. Utah finished the season 0-7 overall (0-5 MWC).
"BYU is the top team in the conference and I'm pleased with how well we competed against them. We have prepared all season with the conference championships in mind and now we just need to make a few adjustments and we will be very competitive at that meet," adds Winslow.
Utah will now have time to prepare for the four-day MWC Championships on February 27-March 1, in Oklahoma City, Okla.
